Are you hinged?A school custodian writes about his lockers becoming "unhinged". It appears that the nuts and bolts keep falling out of his hinges. Yes, there was a time, many years ago, when locker manufacturers actually used nuts and bolts to fasten the hinges to the door. But alas, times have changed and most of them use rivets and you should be too! Your best bet is to use SBS66 rivets with backup washers. These rivets are all steel with 3/16" diameter and a 5/16" grip. You will probably have to run a drill bit through the hinge and the door to get them to fit (13/64"). You will probably need a pneumatic rivet gun to pop these rivets (unless your brother's name is "Arnold"). You can pick one up at your local Lowes or Home Depot for under $50. Once you replace all your nuts and bolts with these rivets, you can relax; this is a job you only have to do once.

Number PlatesA teacher in Indiana wants to put number plates on her classroom lockers but she can't find a plate that will line up with the existing holes. I was curious about this so I wrote back and asked what happened to the numbers that were originally on these lockers. Apparently, these lockers had been moved from other schools and had a "mixed-bag" numbering system. I also found out that the manufacturer of these lockers had long gone out of business. You have 2 options in this case:
Until next month, keep your doors hinged and your nuts tight.
